The paddle is finished in glossy polyurethane varnish, and features a brass handle hole and a series of brass dots on the left face of the blade.

The blackheart sassafras timber is mostly found in Tasmania. The black streaks in the wood are caused by a staining fungus which infects some sassafras trees.
